There are a handful of people that I have shot once or twice a year for the past 10 years. Some have grown from children to adults, and some like Robert have simply aged like a slowly fermenting brew. I took some time out of my schedule last night to stop by and shoot some images of him, as well as document his ongoing full-body tattoo he has been building for almost 9 years. Some of you may know Robert from bar-tripping around Raleigh’s downtown scene. But true friends know him as a great artist, one of the three founding fathers of “Drunken Russian-Artist’s Night” (Among many other ill fated photographer gatherings), and guitarist for the best genre-defining math-metal bands to come out of North Carolina, The Abernathy Complex.

The Abernathy Complex was one of the first bands to give me a shot at photographing them. Even back in the day with no lighting equipment, and an overbearing college professor filling my head with photo do’s and don’ts. Needless to say, I am very thankful for that day, as I made some of the nicest friends I have ever had.

To Robert, Mario, Johnny, David, and John… I hope the world finds you well, with beer in hand good sirs.

The cutest baby ever… but I may be quite biased.

Some shots of my son to send off to a baby modeling agency… who would of thought, babies that represent babies in the modeling industry.

Beverly McIver is an amazing artist based out of the Triangle, and she has an honorary doctorate! She is also the focus of a new HBO Documentary called “Raising Renee” debuting this fall! We had a blast shooting her images!

Brotherhood and friendship are taken very lightly this day and age, from your 1,576 “friends” on facebook, to your misspelled responses via textual transmission.

The world over there are few people I would stand back-to-back with and defend our drunken honor in a sailor-circle-brawl. It just so happened, in my limited travels, that I was able to photograph this man. A man so generous and jolly, you can’t help but shake his hand and thank god you met someone like him. Underneath his rough-and-tumble demeanor and his irish timbre, you will find a man so giving of the self, and quick to cheers a beer and call you brother. A man I am proud to call a friend.

When you’re a Jet
You’re a Jet all the way
From your first cigarette
To your last dyin’ day

When you’re a Jet
If the spit hits the fan
You got brothers around
You’re a family man

The story of my life… very behind in my work… another funny story however…

Back in June I was contacted by a company (whose face shall remain nameless) to shoot a portrait for a story that Entrepreneur Magazine was running. A man in a woman’s field… slippers!

Of course I jumped at the thought of shooting such an interesting fellow. A man that has made a fortune in footwear? How could I resist? So after contracts and paperwork were handled I shot down to Wilson, NC nailed the shoot and off went the proofs. Things were running smoothly and I am feeling pretty good with a good shooting day under my belt and an ice-cold PBR in my hand.

Once the proof was approved and the final invoice sent, I got a peculiar email asking for the rest of the images. “The rest of the images,” I thought to myself… so I looked over the contracts and in black and white there stood “Limited to 2 approved images.”

So in my nicest email voice, I respond that they were not allowed the rest of the images, however we could negotiate a price for their purchase. Well, now our great business relationship had spun into me being a lying photographer. But, being the pro that I am, I pushed for final payment, it was received, the final images were delivered and set to run in the September issue of Entrepreneur… or so I was told.

September came and went and no sign of the images. No replies from the “agent” and no call from the magazine. Well finally I called Entrepreneur to see if the article got cancelled.

THERE WAS NO ARTICLE! This “agent” had falsely presented the article opportunity to Mr. Snoozie himself so she would keep from losing her job. She had gone so far as to hire me as a photographer, and some poor writer no one had even heard from JUST to keep him on the lease, so to speak.

So sadly this may be the only place you see these images… I know, I know… I got paid so who cares?

It is just sad to see so many people take advantage of others. This business should be full of creatives trying to make this field a better place by integrity, honesty, and hard work. *sips PBR*

So I am packing equipment and clothes as we speak, heading for the great south… as if I wasn’t far enough south to begin with!

I will try to update from the road, but with the busy shooting schedule, it may be next to impossible! I will however leave you with one of my favorite shots from this weekend @scumfest

A hot, hot weekend for music and beer! Took my saturday and headed out to Raleigh’s Scumfest, a rock-beer-vendor smorgasbord. Great music from all the bands… old friends, new friends… always a great thing!

Click through below to browse the set, and I may post some here later in the week, but it is late, and I am tired.

Down at my studio on Monday, after a client meeting, I took a walk around and met Art, a really nice guy that works in a metal shop near my space… good stories, everyone has them.

One softbox with ambient fill… I am very tired of carrying strobes everywhere, so I may just stop.

While shooting Art I had a great idea for a new body of work, so subscribe to the blog or even just bookmark for the latest!

I have to say… this weekend I shot what might be the fastest shoot in my 14 years of shooting. Shoot during a hurricane? DAMN RIGHT!

Matt Papa has been continuously refining his music and instilling faith within thousands and thousands of people worldwide. Listen to his music and you can’t help but be touched on a spiritual level. So when the opportunity to photograph the gospel-rock phenom arose, you bet I jumped on it.

Upon arriving to the location I was told that instead of 1 hour to work with I literally had 30 minutes to setup and shoot. Mind you, I had told my assistant to stay at home because I thought I was not crunched for time. Don’t think I’m complaining, cause I’m not… It was a great experience and I would do it everyday if I had the chance.

When you get the rare opportunity to shoot someone as amazing as Matt Papa you suck it up, get it done, and enjoy the experience. The lighting wasn’t an easy setup either, 5-6 strobes with a 10ft white backdrop and miscellaneous grip work.

After setup and one test pop, Matt stepped in. Eight shots and 4 minutes later he stepped out, thanked me, and the stage whisked him away.

I like the second image, because it shows a very vulnerable side…

Did I mention I had an AlienBees 800 drop 12 feet, hit the ground with a sickening thud, and still fire! THANK YOU PAUL C. BUFF!

Did I also mention I was packed up in 6 minutes? Not to brag…

Looking forward to doing some video work with him, so subscribe to my Youtube for all video updates so you don’t miss out.

If you get a chance check out his music, inspiring: Matt Papa.
