There are a handful of people that I have shot once or twice a year for the past 10 years. Some have grown from children to adults, and some like Robert have simply aged like a slowly fermenting brew. I took some time out of my schedule last night to stop by and shoot some images of him, as well as document his ongoing full-body tattoo he has been building for almost 9 years. Some of you may know Robert from bar-tripping around Raleigh’s downtown scene. But true friends know him as a great artist, one of the three founding fathers of “Drunken Russian-Artist’s Night” (Among many other ill fated photographer gatherings), and guitarist for the best genre-defining math-metal bands to come out of North Carolina, The Abernathy Complex.

The Abernathy Complex was one of the first bands to give me a shot at photographing them. Even back in the day with no lighting equipment, and an overbearing college professor filling my head with photo do’s and don’ts. Needless to say, I am very thankful for that day, as I made some of the nicest friends I have ever had.

To Robert, Mario, Johnny, David, and John… I hope the world finds you well, with beer in hand good sirs.

So I have been kicking myself… I have been so busy shooting that PhotoBrew has suffered… I have a couple of episodes in the works, but each is still missing a bit of footage… where does one find the time!

Out on another shoot with a great musician, Wyatt… I am trying to find my style again after years of shooting what the client tells me to shoot… dirty money dictating the look.

More shoots from the week coming soon and perhaps some behind the scenes footage!

I have to say… this weekend I shot what might be the fastest shoot in my 14 years of shooting. Shoot during a hurricane? DAMN RIGHT!

Matt Papa has been continuously refining his music and instilling faith within thousands and thousands of people worldwide. Listen to his music and you can’t help but be touched on a spiritual level. So when the opportunity to photograph the gospel-rock phenom arose, you bet I jumped on it.

Upon arriving to the location I was told that instead of 1 hour to work with I literally had 30 minutes to setup and shoot. Mind you, I had told my assistant to stay at home because I thought I was not crunched for time. Don’t think I’m complaining, cause I’m not… It was a great experience and I would do it everyday if I had the chance.

When you get the rare opportunity to shoot someone as amazing as Matt Papa you suck it up, get it done, and enjoy the experience. The lighting wasn’t an easy setup either, 5-6 strobes with a 10ft white backdrop and miscellaneous grip work.

After setup and one test pop, Matt stepped in. Eight shots and 4 minutes later he stepped out, thanked me, and the stage whisked him away.

I like the second image, because it shows a very vulnerable side…

Did I mention I had an AlienBees 800 drop 12 feet, hit the ground with a sickening thud, and still fire! THANK YOU PAUL C. BUFF!

Did I also mention I was packed up in 6 minutes? Not to brag…

Looking forward to doing some video work with him, so subscribe to my Youtube for all video updates so you don’t miss out.

If you get a chance check out his music, inspiring: Matt Papa.

As of late I have been so concerned with lighting. Strobe this, reflector that. With my move to more commercial and editorial style I realized, photo buyers and art directors don’t want dark images. But then, within all the equipment, you can get lost and overwhelmed with the fact that, it’s just light!

It’s crazy to think that up to 4 years ago I was shooting everything with available light and fluorescents. Getting dirty in photoshop and trying not to crush the blacks (hey that’s not racist, google it!)

So on this particular shoot with folk/bluegrass singer J. Alan Casey, I decided to keep it simple and raw, in the shade with available light. What more can you ask? A nice fill light hitting his face from some sunlight breaking through the trees… does anyone wait for the decisive moment anymore?

I had the great pleasure to meet up with (and shoot) an amazing band in Chapel Hill for the 2nd leg of their July tour. Carolina Still is just one of those acts you can’t help but enjoy the original and chord-striking (no pun intended) music that they produce. Give them a listen at carolinastill.com
